And while thousands have already booked their Christmas delivery slots, it seems stocking up on loo roll is again on the agenda. Yesterday, customers at Costco in Manchester were seen pushing trolleys laden with toilet paper in scenes reminiscent of panic-buying ahead of the first lockdown.
Aisles at some stores have been stripped bare of meat and frozen goods and the Office for National Statistics said one in six shoppers have been unable to buy essential items. And a survey suggested two thirds of shoppers are worried by shortages ahead of Christmas.
Hundreds of thousands have already booked delivery slots for Christmas with one in three starting to stock up on groceries, a Grocer poll of 1,000 people found.
Waitrose had 22,000 festive slots booked by lunchtime on the first day of releasing its dates last week, while 112,000 had been booked by the end of the week. And Ocado has put a “sorry if you haven’t been able to get a Christmas slot in time” reply on its FAQ page.
