Dying dog gets dream final week from owner ‘I wanted to give him whatever he wanted’

Kofi, an 11-year-old German Shepherd, spent his final days doing all of his favourite activities, including eating his favourite food and being given endless love and attention. He enjoyed long walks on the beach, a party with cardboard boxes to tear up and a meal of steak and salmon.

Fiona Gilmore, Kofi’s owner, made the difficult decision to put him to sleep due to his health deteriorating because of his age.

Ms Gilmore booked the appointment for the afternoon of April 10 and took Kofi for a final walk on the beach at Coldingham Bay, near Eyemouth, Scottish Borders that morning

In Kofi’s final moments, he got to play his favourite game, man trailing, which involved hunting a veterinary nurse around a building.

Ms Gilmore said: “I had Kofi since he was seven weeks old.

“When he was six months old we went to live in Italy, we lived in Wales, we travelled around together.

“His back legs were starting to go and he was in pain.

“I needed to make a decision at some point, rather than wait until he couldn’t enjoy anything.

“I just wanted to have a nice final week with him rather than wait until he couldn’t walk.”

“I think he thought he was a celebrity.”

The day before the appointment, Ms Gilmore had a friend over in her garden in Dunbar, East Lothian, to spend time with Kofi and give him as much attention as possible.

During the visit, Kofi enjoyed a lavish meal of steak and salmon, followed by a cake made from liver which was decorated with cream cheese.

Fiona added: “We had a party in the garden, my friend brought a steak, salmon and liver.

“There was German sausage, we cooked that.

“He liked tearing up boxes, we just wanted him to be able to do the things he liked to do.

Ms Gilmore has another dog, Novak, aged two, who she says has been missing Kofi since he was put down.

She stated: “It has been really lovely that I have been able to have a date in mind and been able to do what I wanted to in the run up.

“We have said goodbye with one last walk and a swim in the sea.

“He had a great adventurous life, we did lots of things.

“They have got me through lockdown.”
