Motorists have been warned to make sure the temperature in their vehicle helps to keep them comfortable, else they risk breaking a lesser-known Highway Code rule.
As the autumn months arrive and the temperatures fall, many drivers are swapping air conditioning for the heater on long-distance trips.
A spokesperson for the specialist vehicle insurer Zego noted that carefully considering the temperature inside a car can help drivers avoid drowsiness and potential fines.
They advised: “A well-ventilated car helps in keeping the driver’s senses alert and minimises the risk of drowsiness.
“Even a brief loss of concentration can lead to accidents. A well-regulated cabin temperature can significantly reduce such risks.”
Whilst using the heating and ventilation system in a vehicle can help drivers and other occupants feel more comfortable on longer journeys, keeping the temperature in mind can help to prevent accidents.
According to the Highway Code, all motoroists must make sure that the temperature and air flow inside their vehicle does not cause them to feel drowsy behind the wheel.
Drowsy drivers typically have significantly lengthier reaction times and therefore could face fines of up to £5,000 if they are spotted.
To help motorists avoid being fined, it is strongly advised that they make sure that they are able to effectively raise or lower the temperature in their car when they wish.
In particular, all motorists should regularly check that the cabin filter, sometimes referred to as the pollen filter, is checked regularly and changed at routine intervals.
Typically located under the bonnet or behind the glovebox, the cabin filter makes sure that no dust, grit or leaves enter the cabin, but can get blocked up over time – causing air flow to be greatly restricted.
During the colder months, drivers can prevent drowsiness by making sure they are prepared before each journey.
Many motoring experts recommend that drivers make sure they pack a jumper or coat during the colder months, which can help motorists and other occupants stay comfortable if the weather changes.
If their vehicle has them, it could also be worthwhile to use a heated seat or steering wheel rather than using the ventilation system. These features can help to warm up the parts of the vehicle the driver interacts with, as opposed ot the whole cabin.
