Dog dies after getting trapped in rocks with rapidly rising tide

Firefighters and police dashed to Sunny Beach in Folkestone, Kent, after the dog got into difficulty.

Crews used heavy rescue cutting equipment and drills to cut away rocks in a desperate attempt to reach the dog, but were unable to do so.

The mission on Wednesday evening became “impossible” due to the speed of the rising sea water, Kent Live says.

And after 107 minutes, the decision was made to abandon the rescue attempt.

In a statement regarding the incident, Kent Fire and Rescue Service added: “Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to reports of a trapped dog in the rocks at Sunny Sands Beach in Folkestone. The owner of the dog called 999 around 6.49pm on Wednesday 23 June 2021.

“Two fire engines, a boat and the technical rescue unit were sent to the scene. Heavy rescue cutting equipment and drills were used to cut away rocks to try and reach the dog, but sadly due the speed of the rising sea water it made it impossible to carry out a rescue safely, and it had to be abandoned.

“The crews in attendance worked as fast as they could and did everything possible under the circumstances to save the family pet.

“Our thoughts are with the owner at this sad time.”
