Around 40 firefighters spent hours battling the blaze at the Star Inn in rural Harome, North Yorkshire, but it reduced the restaurant “to ashes”, according to a tweet from the eatery’s account. The 14th century building was busy with customers eating dinner when the fire broke out.

Martin Cook, who was finishing his meal at the time, said: “We were dining in there and it was after 10pm. There were a few of us left at one end of the restaurant.

“Next thing we know, a couple have come back in and that triggered the actual alarm going off inside.

“The staff were absolutely brilliant, they got us all into the backyard….and shortly after, about ten minutes later, the first fire engine arrived so it was really prompt.

“It is such a shame, it is such a fine dining place and what can you say?

“At the moment, our only loss would probably be our coats.”

Pictures published by Teesside Live show the destruction caused by the fire, which has wrecked the building’s thatched roof.

Fire investigators were at the scene earlier today surveying the damage, as they look for clues as to what caused the blaze.

Yesterday, the venue’s chef and patron Andrew Pern wrote on Twitter: “It’s been a long night so far.”

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue confirmed today that the operation has since been dramatically scaled back from last night’s peak.

“Crews have finished damping down hot spots,” it stated online.

“The aerial ladder platform and a fire engine remain at the scene to assist with fire investigations.”

The service continued: “The fire in the thatched roof of the building caused extensive damage to the roof and roof space.

“Crews worked hard to prevent the fire spreading all along the thatched roof, meaning one end of the roof and the ground floor were saved from the fire.

“The incident remains open for revisits later today and fire investigations into the cause are continuing.”
