Coronation Street spoilers: Gail Platt's new lover unveiled as Michael Rodwell returns?

0

Gail (played by Helen Worth) has been focussing on her children’s ever-eventful lives on Coronation Street of late as well as grieving for the loss of her late father. Therefore, she hasn’t had much chance to concentrate on her love life as it’s been on the backburner since the death of Michael (Les Dennis) four years ago. However, in a rather surprising twist, the ITV soap favourite could fall for the charms of his twin brother if she were to embark on a new affair.

Michael and Gail’s relationship didn’t get off to the most conventional of starts as when he arrived on the cobbles in 2014, he broke into the Platt residence.

He was caught red-handed by the character who would later become his wife and he was sentenced to a stint behind bars.

From there, he developed a friendship with the soap stalwart through a Restorative Justice scheme, although the rest of the Platt clan weren’t too impressed.

Upon his release, the pair spent more time together and their connection became more romantic than platonic.

They married the next year but their happiness wouldn’t last long as Michael discovered his wife had gone along with the lie that Andy Carver (Oliver Farnworth) was his dead son Gavin.

This pushed Michael into the arms of Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver) but villain Pat Phelan (Connor McIntyre) drove a wedge between them and Gail’s husband left the cobbles.

Only a few months later, he returned and wanted to give things another go with his estranged wife but tragedy soon prevailed.

The former jailbird had a grudge to bear with Phelan and as a result, he ended up having a heart attack on the villain’s building site.

Although he might not have killed Michael, the murderer still concealed his death until his own reign of terror came to an end in 2018.

It was at this point Gail learned the truth about her husband’s demise and since then, she hasn’t been able to move on.

The arrival of his twin brother, who could very well be alive, might just change things as the actor who played Michael, Les, 67, has spoken out on returning to the soap.

In an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk, the actor said when asked about his character’s twin brother arriving: “I’ve been listening to a podcast of the Sopranos and there was one character in that and they killed him off and the writer went ‘What did we do that for?’

“So, his twin brother turned up. Sometimes, in the likes of Dynasty, somebody wakes up and it was all a dream.”

Les continued: “But in the Sopranos, they made it really believable that this guy’s twin had turned up.

“I was thinking about that this morning. I don’t think Michael Rodwell’s twin is going to turn up but I don’t know.

“It was great to do it. I look back on [my] time on that show and it was a great learning curve for me because you’re acting with these brilliant performers.

“[They’re] wonderful actors and you’re having to so many scenes a day and do it really quickly and sometimes you’re working on episodes that were two weeks before the episode that you’re working on that day.”

“And suddenly having to jump backwards and forwards and think about where your character was and how your character was,” Les continued.

“I think soap actors are so on their game. They’re so good at what they do and you know the training means you can then go on and different things.”

Although Les doesn’t think a twin could turn up at the moment, stranger things have happened in the world of soaps so could Michael return in this interesting twist?

If so, will they inherit the same romantic charm as their brother and pursue an affair with Gail?

Coronation Street continues Monday at 7:30pm on ITV.
