Coco Gauff confronted 'screaming' brother after getting rare opportunity at Miami Open

Coco Gauff revealed that she had to confront her “screaming” teenage brother as she tried to rest during the Miami Open. The world No. 3 is getting the rare opportunity to sleep in her own bed instead of staying in a hotel as she lives near the WTA 1000 tournament. But it hasn’t all been smooth sailing at home.

Gauff is enjoying the benefits of playing in Florida as she gets to commute to the Miami Open from her house this fortnight. The 20-year-old lives in Delray Beach so it takes no more than an hour for her to drive to the site at the Hard Rock Stadium.

The home comforts seem to be working well for the top-ranked American, as she has stormed into the last 16 for the loss of just seven games. But Gauff admitted that there was one downside to staying in her family house instead of a hotel.

“My family can be a little loud sometimes,” Gauff told the WTA. One member in particular – 16-year-old Codey – made things difficult when he got too into one of his games.

The US Open champion added: “My little brother … I had to text him this morning … stop screaming. I think he was playing a game. He said he was sorry.” Despite the disturbance, Gauff has been able to earn a couple of statement wins in Miami.

Her opening match was played on Friday – a day that was almost entirely a washout. Play started six hours late but there was only a very small window before all of the matches were cancelled entirely. But Gauff managed to get the job done in just 77 minutes, beating Nadia Podoroska 6-1 6-2 to ensure that she didn’t have to come back and continue the next day.

“I didn’t really think about trying to finish until the last game of the match when I kind of saw it getting darker, then they turned on the lights, the temperature dropped. I’m from here, so I know that’s like rain coming any second,” Gauff said after her straightforward victory.

“That’s when I thought about the weather. It was like, Okay, let’s get it done. Especially a match like this where you’re so close to finishing. I honestly didn’t want to come out here tomorrow where it’s supposed to rain and wait all day again to play. I was like, Let me try to get it done as quick as possible.”

She followed it up with another routine victory on Sunday. Gauff won the last 10 games in a row after trailing Oceane Dodin 2-4 in the first set, coming through 6-4 6-0. She now faces either Naomi Osaka or Caroline Garcia for a spot in the quarter-final.
