Cleaner’s easy 10-minute daily task ‘works wonders’ to ‘put an end to window condensation’

Condensation, a common household damp issue, is set to become more prevalent as autumn and winter approaches.

Condensation is caused by warm air hitting cold surfaces or excessive humidity in the home and will lead to mould.

Fortunately, it’s often a problem you can tackle yourself without calling in the pros. A cleaning buff sought advice on the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook page on how to combat window condensation, and Lisa Stewart offered a simple daily solution.

She said: “When cleaning clients’ houses, I see lots of homes that struggle with condensation. Ventilation is the only way to get rid of it.”

She advised: “Open your window for 10 minutes every morning. It works wonders for putting an end to window condensation and even mould.”

This sentiment was echoed by other members of the group. Jean Woods suggested: “Try to keep the windows ajar a little in the morning as it helps with damp and condensation by allowing air to circulate.”

Janet Green added: “Need to open windows in the morning for a couple of minutes.”

Sue Watson shared her routine: “Ours are like this if we have them shut all the time, we open ours during the morning. I also clean ours every week inside and out.

These tips from Mrs Hinch enthusiasts align with advice from window specialists at Cardiff Window Cleaning, who note that upstairs areas, particularly bedrooms, are most prone to condensation due to their warmth.

They advised: “It’s important to ventilate your bedroom by having your windows slightly open.”

While some options might be a bit steep in price, devotees of cleaning sensation Mrs Hinch have suggested investing in a dehumidifier. Miranda Hill recommended: “Meaco dehumidifier, expensive but absolutely brilliant!”

Lynn Alexander endorsed the idea, saying: “Get a dehumidifier. I cannot recommend my Meaco one highly enough.”

Kitty Green shared her experience: “Honestly a plug-in dehumidifier is one of the best things in the house! My grandad got us our current one from Lidl and it’s amazing.”

Sonia Woods added her two cents: “Dehumidifier and I bought a Karcher window cleaner just to suck up the condensation every morning.”
