Chris Smalling was robbed at his family home on Friday morning in a terrifying ordeal for the Roma defender, according to reports from Italy. Smalling, his wife Sam and two-year-old child were home at the time. Three armed robbers broke into his house in the early hours of the morning and forced the former Manchester United star to open the family safe, before taking valuable items.
Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport claim Smalling’s wife rang the police just before 5am.
The report says officers arrived at the villa, located 25 miles south of Rome, with the family ‘very distressed’.
The three armed and hooded robbers are claimed to have stolen Smalling’s Rolex watch, as well as other jewellery and valuable items from the safe.
The police are investigating the case and Roma have offered out support to Smalling and his family.
Smalling was not part of the Roma squad who overcame Ajax in the Europa League quarter-final second leg on Thursday.
The 31-year-old is recovering from a knee injury and has not played since March 7 due to the problem.
