Celtic to snub Rangers guard of honour as Brendan Rodgers advice ignored

Celtic have decided to snub the chance to give Rangers a guard of honour when the two sides meet in Sunday’s Old Firm derby. The two sides clash at Celtic Park on Sunday (12pm) in what will be the first meeting between the two sides since Rangers were crowned champions nearly two weeks ago.

Steven Gerrard’s side were dumped out of the Europa League last night by Slavia Prague following a 2-0 defeat at Ibrox (3-1 aggregate)>

Now his men will bid to finish the Scottish Premiership season unbeaten after securing their first title in 10 years.

Celtic have the perfect chance to wreck Rangers’ ambitions as they look to lay down a marker ahead of next season.

Earlier this week, former Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers urged his old side to “show humility and class”.

He was involved with a Chelsea side who received a guard of honour from Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United in 2005, something that still resonates with him.

But Kennedy has decided to go down a different route and is not prepared to put rivalries aside.

Rodgers said: “My feeling is always that you should show humility and class and be a sporting team.

“I can never forget when I was at Chelsea as a young coach and in that first season with Jose Mourinho they won the title.

“I remember going to Old Trafford to watch the game and I’m sure that the United players didn’t want to do it.

“That must have been really, really difficult but it showed you the class of Sir Alex and showed you the humility of him.

“It was sporting but can also provide you with great motivation going forward.

“It’s something that for me – despite the rivalry and how difficult it is – you should do and then use it as motivation.”
