Carol Kirkwood discusses he ‘go-to’ meal for house guests

The award-winning meteorologist, 58, has established herself as a beloved figure within British TV. She has presented weather reports for a number of BBC programmes including BBC Breakfast and The One Show. Kirkwood has often admitted she dreaded having to leave the corporation and the role she described as her “dream job”.

The TV star had received equal praise from fans and the industry, which led her to win a host of TRIC awards.

Kirkwood has spent more than two decades on BBC Breakfast but initially joined the corporation in 1993 as a secretarial reserve.

Despite being snubbed for talking “too fast” by a caller, she continued to pursue her dream of becoming an on-screen presenter.

Kirkwood was trained by The Met Office before she moved onto radio and eventually returning to the BBC’s Weather Centre.

The Scottish star hadn’t considered leaving the corporation – despite flirtations with other TV shows.

Kirkwood appeared in 2015 Strictly Come Dancing as well as appearing on CBBC, Would I Lie To You, Hollyoaks, Wimbledon coverage and more.

During a 2012 interview, she detailed her fears about having to step down from BBC Breakfast.

She told The Sun: “I know the clock is ticking down for me.”

Kirkwood, then 50, was concerned about being replaced by someone younger.

She said: “I know there are thousands of younger girls who will kill for my job.”

When Kirkwood considered what it would be like to leave the BBC, she became emotional.

She said: “It will be like losing a limb the day I’m told I’m no longer doing weather.”

However, in accordance with her happy-go-lucky personality, the star reigned in her negative thoughts.

Kirkwood said: “Until then, it is a case of make hay while the sun shines.”

Despite her sunny disposition, it hasn’t always been for an easy ride for the star.

During her early years as a BBC secretary, she recalled: “One woman caller heard my voice.

“[They] said, ‘Oh, for heaven’s sake, girl, speak the Queen’s English.’”

Kirkwood claimed the moment “shook” her and made her realise that she needed to “speak more clearly” and “slow down”.

Despite that early-career put down, the star went on to become a household name on BBC Breakfast.

When asked if she would consider stepping down by the Radio Times in 2018, she rejected the notion.

Kirkwood said: “I’d never give up the weather on [BBC] Breakfast.”

She joked that it would be a hard task for BBC bosses to remove her.

Kirkwood said: “If they showed me the door, I’d hang on by my fingernails.”

With a more serious tone, she explained: “As long as [BBC] Breakfast wants me, I’ll be there.”

Kirkwood admitted that she “loved” being on the show – despite the difficult hours.

Previously, she described feeling “permanently jet-lagged” as she had to wake up at 2.45am.

The star has given thousands of weather reports in her lifetime but claimed to “still remember” her “very first programme” back in 1998.

Kirkwood presented it alongside Sophie Raworth and Jeremy Bowen and has seen scores of news anchors since.

In 2018, she claimed they all got on very well and told the Sunday Post: “We are very much a family.”

On the difficult days of the job, Kirkwood said she would think of one touching moment when a fan raced over to her.

The moment stood out from other times when she was stopped in the supermarket to be told “lovely things”.

Kirkwood recalled: “One chap said his mum was very ill in a hospice.”

He told her that “some days” his mother “felt like giving up” but Kirkwood’s “bright and breezy” attitude gave her hope.

Kirkwood continued: “He said that seeing me… like the day was filled with joy, made her feel like there was a lot to love for.

“I have never forgotten that.”
