Carer’s Allowance is a benefit that is paid at a flat-rate to the eligible people who claim it. Currently, the rate stands at £67.25 per week, however it is set to change next month.

It may be unpaid carers are eligible for the payment if they care for someone for at least 35 hours per week, and the recipient of the care gets certain benefits.

The carer doesn’t need to be related to nor live with the person they care for.

It isn’t possible to get paid extra if the carer cares for more than one person.

Furthermore, if two people care for the same person, only one of them can claim Carer’s Allowance.

Prior to claiming, it’s very important to be aware Carer’s Allowance can affect the other benefit that both the claimant and the person they care for can get.

Furthermore, it may be tax needs to be paid on it if the person’s income is greater than the Personal Allowance.

Claiming Carer’s Allowance can be done online via the Government website.

There are various things which are required in order to claim.

“You need their:

  • Date of birth and address
  • National Insurance number if they’re 16 or over
  • Disability Living Allowance reference if they’re under 16.”

It is possible to backdate a claim by up to three months.

For those who can’t apply online, they can instead apply by post.

The address which the application needs to be sent to can be found at the end of the form.
