It has not been confirmed which owners will pay the new charge if one is installed but the mileage-based system would suit cars across all fuel types.
However, Fiona Howarth, CEO of Octopus Electric Vehicles has said the Government should be “using incentives” to push uptake on new models and not consider extra charges,
She said electric vehicles still made up a “small fraction” of the cars on UK streets and encouraged fees to be added elsewhere.
Speaking to Express.co.uk, she said: “There were just over 100,000 registered sales of electric vehicles in the UK last year.
