A car crashed and flipped outside a Newark restaurant where a man was found shot early Monday morning, leaving at least two people injured and others in the dark.
“At approximately 3:04 a.m. today, Monday, April 1, 2024, Police responded to the 700 block of Sanford Avenue on a call of a shooting,” Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé said in a statement sent to the Daily News. “Responding officers also located a motor vehicle that had crashed at the scene and was lying on its side.”
Rescue workers extricated one of two passengers from the overturned vehicle. The car appeared to have struck a light pole and knocked out a transformer before coming to a stop. The collision knocked out power around the crash scene at Abinger Place and Sanford Avenue.
The gunshot victim was located inside the Family Manor Restaurant on nearby Sanford Avenue around the time of the collision, according to ABC News. He and the driver of the automobile were taken separately to University Hospital where they’re reportedly in stable condition.
The relationship between the people in the car and the shooting victim in the restaurant — if any — is unclear. The status of the passenger in that automobile was not immediately reported either.
The shooting and the car crash remain under investigation.
