Queen’s period of rest is ‘working for her’ says expert

The Queen carried out three official engagements and one private meeting on November 24. Her face-to-face audience with the Governor of the Bank of England, Andrew Bailey, hit the front page as Buckingham Palace shared snaps of the sovereign appearing in good spirits and health while shaking hands and smiling with her guest.

The Court Circular, which records all official engagements by working royals, listed two more engagements completed by the Queen on Wednesday.

One entry read: “Lieutenant Colonel John Kaye was received by The Queen this afternoon and delivered up his Stick of Office upon relinquishing his appointment as Lieutenant of Her Majesty’s Body Guard of the Honourable Corps of Gentlemen at Arms.”

Another entry listed the weekly appointment of Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the Queen.

It read: “The Rt Hon Boris Johnson MP (Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury) had an audience of The Queen via telephone this evening.”

As the head of state, the Queen has been holding weekly audiences with all her prime ministers.

They used to take place in person at Buckingham Palace.

But since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020, the Queen and Mr Johnson have mostly spoken over the phone.

Their first face-to-face audience since the arrival of Covid in the UK took place in June, but the pair haven’t since resumed a steady schedule of in-person meetings.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Queen took part in another meeting.

But, as this was a private affair, it was not registered by the Court Circular.

The official Twitter account of the Romanian royal family, Familia Regală, wrote on Wednesday: “This afternoon, Her Majesty Margareta of Romania and HRH Prince Radu were received at Windsor Castle by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

“The Romanian royal couple paid a private visit to Her Britannic Majesty, in the first of their four-day public visit to the United Kingdom.”

Margareta is the eldest daughter of King Michael I, the last King of Romania who was forced to abdicate in 1948 after his country’s parliament proclaimed the nation a republic.

Following her father’s death in 2017, Margareta claimed the headship of the House of Romania.

Margareta’s mother Queen Anne of Romania met Michael I in November 1947, when they travelled to the UK to attend the nuptials of Elizabeth and Prince Philip.

The current head of the House of Romania first met Queen Elizabeth II aged three during the summer of 1952 at Balmoral Castle.

During her childhood, she spent some holidays with Prince Charles and his sister Princess Anne, further strengthening the bond of her House with the Windsors.

The Queen last attended a major royal engagement on October 19, when she hosted a reception attended by Government officials and business leaders at Windsor Castle.

On the following day, it was announced the monarch agreed to cancel a two-day trip to Northern Ireland after her medical team had advised her to rest for a few days.

She has since cancelled other key planned face-to-face events she was scheduled to attend, including the evening reception at COP26 and the Festival of Remembrance.

The Queen was due to attend the National Service of Remembrance in person on November 14.

However, the monarch pulled out of the event just hours before she was due to appear on one of the balconies near the Cenotaph.

Buckingham Palace said in a statement: “The Queen, having sprained her back, has decided this morning with great regret that she will not be able to attend today’s Remembrance Sunday service at the Cenotaph.

“Her Majesty is disappointed that she will miss the service.”
