Brighton sack academy manager John Morling for Covid breach that was reported to the FA just days after being linked with move to Newcastle

Brighton academy manager John Morling has been sacked over a Covid breach that was reported to the Football Association, Sportsmail understands.

Sources claim chief executive Paul Barber has circulated an email to staff confirming Morling’s departure.

Just last week, Sportsmail revealed Morling was a target for Newcastle, who are set to confirm Dan Ashworth, who left Brighton, as director of football.

But we understand the official reasons behind his departure are not due to the recent links with the Magpies.

It has been indicated to Sportsmail that the reasons connected to his exit is due to a Covid breach relating to the isolation of an academy player who tested positive en route back from a match.

It is understood a complaint was the made to the Football Association about the alleged breach – understood to be from the member the young player’s family – and Morling was suspended pending an investigation.

And the club have now internally confirmed Morling has left the club.
