Boris snaps: Macron's 'clown' jibe spectacularly backfires as UK hits back at France

The French President has made a series of derogatory remarks about the Prime Minister and the United Kingdom in recent days as he desperately tries to court votes back home ahead of next year’s general election.

Downing Street had been keeping tight-lipped about the antics and rhetoric emerging from Paris, looking to help see diplomatic relations after a rocky few weeks.

Yesterday it was reported by French media that Mr Macron had referred to Boris Johnson as a “clown” in meetings with advisers on the migrant crisis in the Channel.

But No10 snapped back today after French President overstepped the mark with new comments issued last night.

He inflamed tensions last night when discussing the Northern Ireland Protocol as he declared the Brexit row a matter of “war and peace”.

“It is for us an existential question,” he said of the Protocol.

“I think we should not play with this topic.”

Reacting today, the Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: “Look, when it comes to the Protocol, it is vital that we use measures and appropriate language, given the sensitivities involved.”

Saying the UK and EU “urgently need to make progress” in negotiations, he added: “It is obviously welcome that President Macron recognises this as a serious situation that needs to be resolved.”
