Boris set to wield axe in Cabinet reshuffle as Raab, Patel and Williamson face the chop

The Prime Minister is thought to want to present a new look Government in time for the Conservative Party conference at the beginning of October. Favourites for demotion include Dominic Raab, the Foreign Secretary, Gavin Williamson, the Education Secretary and Priti Patel the Home Secretary. Mr Raab is still reeling from criticism of his handling of the Afghanistan crisis, while Ms Patel has come under increasing fire for her inability to stem the flow of migrants to Britain from France.

Discontent with Mr Williamson has been growing, ever since the A-Level exams fiasco of last summer.

The Times reports that both Liz Truss and Michael Gove stand to be the big winners of any reshuffle.

The International Trade Secretary is being touted to succeed Dominic Raab at the Foreign Office.

While Mr Gove is also being tipped to head up the Foreign Office, it is believed that he has his eyes set on the Home Office.

“We need someone to grip that department and Michael has a record of doing that everywhere he goes,” one MP told The Times.

Mr Johnson pressed ahead with his plans for social care reform on Wednesday, despite anger from among a section of his own MPs.

Mr Johnson said the majority of the funds raised by the NI increase would go towards catching up on the backlog in the NHS created by the Covid pandemic.

This will involve increasing hospital capacity and creating space for nine million more appointments, scans and operations.

Sir Keir Starmer, the Labour leader, dismissed the proposals as “sticking plaster”, while social care bosses warned that the plan did not go far enough.
