The youngster was on holiday at Sandy Bay in Exmouth, Devon, when she got into difficulty, police said. Emergency services were scrambled to the scene on Friday but, after a large operation, found the girl lifeless at the base of some cliffs.
Her next-of-kin have been informed and the death is not being treated as suspicious, reports Devon Live.
A police spokesman said: “Devon and Cornwall Police attended a location in Exmouth after reports that a person was in difficulty.
“The body of a 13-year-old girl, who was on holiday with her family from out of the force area, was discovered at the base of cliffs at Sandy Bay, Exmouth.
“Her next-of-kin have been informed.
“Her death is not being treated as suspicious. A file is being prepared for the coroner.”
The response from police on Friday was said to involve multiple police units in addition to the CID, according to witnesses at the scene.
One man said: “It’s a very significant response with CID also in attendance.”
