Billie Piper says famous people are often ‘very damaged’

The I Hate Suzie star has opened up about her relationship with the former BBC DJ. After her split from Evans, who she was married to for three years, she described her twenties as “quite wild”. Piper, now 38, recently told Red magazine that she “needed to fall apart” because she was famous from such a young age and the relationship with Evans.

She felt it was important to “not care about” how she looked “every waking moment” and getting in trouble for “saying the wrong things”.

Piper admitted she didn’t want to be considered “a role model for children” at that time.

The star went on to marry Lewis actor Laurence Fox in 2007 and had two sons with him before they broke up nine years later.

She is now dating Johnny Lloyd, from the band Tribes, and has a daughter with the musician.

Piper claimed not to understand the “key” to her relationship with Lloyd working but was happy.

In the past, she made similar comments about Evans.

Their relationship ended in 2004 and three years later they were divorced.

Last year, she fondly recalled their “reckless, amazing” marriage and claimed they “got completely hammered for three years”.

In the series, David Tennant Does A Podcast With…, Piper described it as “so much fun” but “just living very hard”.

Piper said she “did not regret” her years with the DJ despite the toll of partying regularly.

She said: “[There was] a lot of love and a big dose of curiosity and just, yeah, [an] amazing time.”

Piper thought it was “funny” when she reflected on those years because “everyone framed that period” of her life as being bad.

She claimed many saw it was “horribly debauched, “irresponsible” and remembered her “falling apart, looking like s*** [and] putting on weight”.

While some people considered it a bad time in her life, she described it as “very important”.

Piper continued: “I needed that.

“Not looking perfect every day in a tabloid was the best way for me to heal.”

Piper claimed she was “completely unhappy, starving and dark on the inside” whenever she was photographed looking pristine.

She said that dark truth lay behind “every” picture of her “looking completely groomed and manicured within an inch of my life”.

The obsession with her appearance led to a counter-swing, she claimed.

Piper said: “I haven’t brushed my hair since!”

The star felt her marriage to Evans worked because it was what she “imagined… university years felt like”.

Piper continued: “Sort of reckless but you’re learning a lot.”

She offered a different take on her relationship at that time and said: “It wasn’t just ‘Oh, we’re going out and getting f***ed’.

“We had a very caring and loving relationship.

“It was an incredible time and not to undermine our relationship because we also had a very loving relationship.”

In Piper’s interview with Red magazine, which came out this week, she revealed previous relationships had left her with “codependency” issues.

She claimed those harder times gave her an “extreme desire to feel loved and safe”.

Over the years, she has sought help and believed she was in a much better place now.

Piper said: “I’ve learned about attachment issues and codependency.

“I never saw [it] as a problem until I did that work on myself.”
