Best automotive April Fools' jokes include a retro special edition and a dog-friendly EV

Despite the motoring industry facing pressure all over the world, many popular brands showed their lighter side during April Fools’ Day with a number of products drivers are unlikely to see.

One of the most popular April Fools’ jokes of 2024 came from Volkswagen, who announced a new special edition version of their most popular electric car.

The Volkswagen ID3 Harlequin refers to the Polo Harlequin of the 1990s, an incredibly distinctive variant of the German brand’s popular hatchback that featured different coloured body panels.

However, going the extra mile, the brand also added that the ID3 Harlequin will be coated in electroluminescent paint that allows body panels to light up with the sound system or the ChatGPT feature recently introduced to all Volkswagen cars.

Nevertheless, taking to their website, a spokesperson from Volkswagen admitted: “We have a small confession to make. The truth is, when we said, ‘completely made up’, that’s exactly what we meant. Well, it is April 1st after all.”

Meanwhile, BMW Ireland stated that it was set to introduce a special ‘Cleaning Suit’ which makes washing vehicles practically effortless.

In a video, posted to Instagram, we see someone dressed up as a roller at a car wash dancing around a BMW 5-Series.

Whilst, rather concerningly, the person in the BMW Cleaning Suit seemingly could not see out from the outfit, few people are set to be affected since it is incredibly unlikely to appear on the company’s website.

In America, Honda announced a new piece of technology that could help four-legged friends get the most out of their latest electric car.

PAW-S, which stands for Pet Activated Wireless System, was touted as a new feature on the e:Ny1 SUV that gives dogs their own special car key that can help them open the boot and use the infotainment system to contact other dogs.

Whilst some drivers may appreciate features that help to keep their dogs calmer during car rides, this is an idea that is not set to leave the drawing board anytime soon.

However, it wasn’t just car brands that cracked jokes during April Fools Day, with the American autonomous taxi service Waymo deciding to have some fun with passengers.

In a video, uploaded to social media by an unsuspecting customer, the electric Jaguar I-Pace taxi suddenly announced it was stopping to get some petrol.

However, after a short pause and a comedy drum roll, the driverless EV stated ‘Just kidding, I’m all-electric. Happy April Fools’ Day!”
