Barcelona stars want Ronald Koeman to 'abandon' Georginio Wijnaldum transfer

Barcelona players have reportedly made it clear that they would prefer Ronald Koeman to focus his efforts on signing Neymar this summer as opposed to bringing in Georginio Wijnaldum. The Holland international has just a few months left on his contract at Liverpool with reports suggesting that he is expected to leave this summer.

Jurgen Klopp has spoken glowingly about the midfielder all season long, indicating that he wants Wijnaldum to sign an extension.

Speaking last month, the 30-year-old brushed off questions over his immediate future, insisting there is “no news”.

“The most important thing right now is that we fix things in the game as a team and we get results,” Wijnaldum said.

“Talking about an individual, in this case about me and my contract situation – because I just said there’s no news, I think we can focus on better things than on my situation.

“When there is news, we will bring it out.”

Reports linking Wijnaldum with a move away from Anfield emerged last summer when Koeman took over at the Nou Camp.

It was said that the new Barcelona boss was keen to link back up with Wijnaldum having worked together with the Dutch national side.

Thiago Alcantara’s arrival on Merseyside also raised questions on Wijnaldum’s future, but he ended up staying and has been an ever-present once again in Klopp’s side.

And the report states the group of Barcelona stars would prefer Koeman to focus his efforts on bringing Neymar back to the club.

The Brazilian was sold to Paris Saint-Germain back in 2017 for a world record fee in the region of £200million.

But Neymar is approaching the final year of his contract in Paris and Barcelona are hopeful of luring the 29-year-old back to Spain.

Barcelona will also be hoping to get Lionel Messi to sign an extension this summer, when his current contract is set to expire.
