Barcelona ‘are already in talks over move for RB Leipzig’s Dani Olmo and could go for dream buy Erling Haaland and Paul Pogba option next summer’

  • Barcelona endured a difficult summer with the club announcing a £1.15bn debt
  • The woes weakened the club in the transfer market and forced Lionel Messi’s exit
  • Reports claim Barcelona will be more ambitious in the window next summer
  • A move for RB Leipzig and Spain international Dani Olmo is already underway
  • Erling Haaland and Paul Pogba reportedly remain options for the Spanish giants

Barcelona are already working on a deal to sign RB Leipzig forward Dani Olmo and could make moves for Erling Haaland and Paul Pogba next summer, say reports.

The Catalans endured a nightmare summer transfer window just gone following off-the-pitch turmoil, including a £1.15billion debt announced in August which saw them unable to keep star man and talisman Lionel Messi, who is now at Paris Saint-Germain.

The summer crisis also limited Barcelona’s muscles in the transfer market, with the Spanish giants only signing free agents in Sergio Aguero, Eric Garcia and Memphis Depay, with Yusuf Demir and Luuk de Jong joining on loan and new right-back Emerson Royal being shifted to Tottenham for a profit.

And according to Spanish news outlet Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona could go all-out in the transfer window next season, with talks with Leipzig’s Olmo already underway with Haaland and Pogba deemed as ‘dream’ and ‘option’ purchases respectively.

The report claims Catalonia-born winger Olmo was very close to rejoining Barcelona in the final days of the summer transfer window but a move never materalised, with the 23-year-old discussing a five-year contract with the LaLiga side in that process.

Barcelona reportedly now have a deal in principle with the player, meaning all they need to do now is negotiate a fee with German side Leipzig and agree a salary with the winger.

Olmo, who spent seven years in the Barcelona academy before moving to Dinamo Zagreb in 2014 ahead of his Leipzig transfer, could be pursued by the Catalans in the winter but it is expected that the Bundesliga side will want to keep him for the latter end of the season.

Meanwhile, Dortmund striker Haaland is deemed as the ‘dream’ option by Barcelona president Joan Laporta as speculation over the Norwegian forward looks set to roll into 2022.

In April of this year, the 21-year-old’s father and agent were spotted in Barcelona being picked up at the city’s airport by Laporta’s assistant for talks over a new deal.

Chelsea reportedly bid for Haaland during the summer but the Premier League side failed to meet Dortmund’s £170million valuation for the player.

Haaland has a £76m release clause that comes into effect next year, meaning Europe’s elite are likely to return for the striker who has scored 66 goals in 66 games since joining Dortmund from Red Bull Salzburg in January 2020.

However, a stumbling block for Barcelona is the large add-ons package that Haaland’s agent Mino Raiola and father Alf-Inge would reportedly demand – a figure which could see both representatives pocket £17m each.

Raiola also represents Manchester United midfielder Pogba, who remains an option for Barcelona to sign next summer with his contract situation at Old Trafford still not resolved.

The Frenchman’s deal expires at the end of this season, with Pogba able to negotiate with any team in Europe on a pre-contract agreement on January 1.

Italian agent Raiola, however, has been touting a potential Pogba return to Juventus, the club where the 28-year-old played for four years before making a then-world record move back to Manchester in 2016.

He told RAI this week: ‘Pogba’s contract expires next year. We will talk to Manchester and see.

‘For sure Turin has remained in his heart and he cares a lot about these things. The possibility of returning to Juventus is there but it also depends on Juve.’

According to fellow Spanish news outlet SPORT, Barcelona could renew their interest in Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling, who has been a long-term target for the club.

Sterling, who enjoyed a successful Euro 2020 tournament with England, has played six times for Pep Guardiola’s side this season but the majority of those appearances have come via the substitutes bench.
