Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini has pleaded with English fans who cancelled the European Super League to do the same to VAR.

The 64-year-old was furious with a decision to chalk off Ruslan Malinovskyi’s goal in their 1-0 defeat to Fiorentina on Sunday.

Hans Hateboer was standing in an offside position as he tried to chase through a long ball which neither he or his marker could get on the end of but Malinovskyi was there to find the back of the net.

The linesman flagged offside and it was confirmed after a check by VAR, though there was fury from the Atalanta camp over the decision as Hateboer didn’t touch the ball.

As reported by Football Italia, Gasperini described VAR as a ‘dangerous tool that affects results’.

He said: ‘The Malinovskyi episode is just the latest. I’m still angry, VAR has become a very dangerous tool that affects the results. Unfortunately, it’s used in situations that are very clear, which then become distorted.

‘You don’t understand when the referee decides and when VAR decides. This makes you think negatively, and it’s a bad thing, the worst that can happen to football.

‘I hope that the English fans who had the Super League cancelled, will also blow up the VAR system, which is a tool that if badly used really creates great dangers for football.’

There was public fury in England after plans were announced for the ‘big six’ to join the European Super League.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City, Manchester United and Tottenham were part of the 12 European giants who said they would take part in the project.

Less than 48 hours later, all six English teams withdrew after protests among their supporters.

VAR was introduced to Serie A in the 2017-18 season, but much like in England, has faced criticism for marginable decisions.

The costly decision for Atalanta leaves them fifth in Serie A – 12 points off leaders AC Milan.
