Antonio Conte blasts ‘unfair’ refusal to rearrange Europa Conference clash with Rennes after government shut down the training ground amid Covid outbreak with Tottenham even ‘offering to play in France’

  • Tottenham had their game against Rennes cancelled due to Covid outbreak
  • Antonio Conte wants a chance to have the fixture completed another time
  • He says Spurs are paying for disagreement between UEFA and Premier League

Antonio Conte has hit out at UEFA and the Premier League for failing to agree on when Tottenham could fulfill their Europa Conference League clash with Rennes.

Spurs were forced to postpone their game with the Ligue 1 side after a mass Covid outbreak in their squad, also leading to their game against Brighton being called off. The Rennes clash was then cancelled when a solution could not be found to rearrange the fixture.

Conte insists the club still want to play Rennes and said: ‘I think we deserve to play our chance against them to go to the next group.

‘We don’t find a good solution between UEFA and the Premier League, why does Tottenham has to pay for this?

‘It’s not fair we have to pay for a situation that isn’t our fault. I understand if we did something wrong but in this way, for the club, the players, the staff, it’s very difficult to understand what is happening.

‘We want to play the game. Tottenham deserves to play the game and the last game of this group. I think it’s a really strange situation.

‘When the government decides to close our training ground and we cannot train and it’s for this reason we cannot play, not another reason.

‘We don’t have fault. We deserve to play this game and try to go to the next round.’

Tottenham attempted to rearrange the game but UEFA put out a statement saying: ‘In accordance with Annex J of the Europa Conference League regulations, Uefa, in cooperation with the two clubs tried to find a viable solution in order to reschedule the match, so as to ensure the group stage could be completed accordingly.

‘Unfortunately, despite all efforts, a solution that could work for both clubs could not be found.

‘As a consequence, the match can no longer be played and the matter will, therefore, be referred to the Uefa Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body for a decision to be taken in accordance with Annex J of the above-mentioned competition regulations.

Tottenham are currently third in Group G, three points behind Vitesse and Rennes have already qualified for the next round. Tottenham have an advantage over Vitesse when it comes to head-to-head.

Football London report that Spurs tried to postpone their Premier League game against Leicester so they could fulfil the Rennes fixture in midweek and even offered to travel to France despite it being a home tie.

But Thursday’s game will go ahead at the King Power as planned and no solution has been found.
