Alarming new pandemic with '60 percent fatality in humans' warning – what you need to know

Health experts have warned of a posisble future pandemic as avian influenza (bird flu) is continuing to spread through wild animals.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) warned humans don’t have immunity against bird flu – causing fears it could spread quickly and cause another pandemic.

The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on Monday that a person in Texas tested positive for H5N1 bird flu.

According to the CDC’s statement: “This person had exposure to dairy cattle in Texas presumed to be infected with HPAI A(H5N1) viruses”.

It’s not common for humans to catch the virus from infected birds, but the agency says new types of the virus could be dangerous in the future.

To stop a bird flu pandemic, the agency says we need to take steps to limit exposure and stop the virus spreading to mammals and humans.

The EFSA advised: “Key options for actions include enhancing surveillance targeting humans and animals, ensuring access to rapid diagnostics, promoting collaboration between animal and human sectors, and implementing preventive measures such as vaccination”.

The agency also highlighted the need for “careful planning of poultry and fur animal farming,” especially in areas with lots of waterfowl like ducks and geese.

Human symptoms can range from mild – eye infections and upper respiratory symptoms to mroe severe illness – pneumonia, according to the CDC.
