Horticulturist David Domoney told viewers what fruit they can plant now, including which fruit is the best option for beginner gardeners. David and Alan also advised the audience at home on how to plant the fruit for the best results come summer.

Alan welcomed David onto his show today to give viewers tips about planting fruit in their gardens.

“There’s something quite magical about creating a section of your garden dedicated to edible delights,” Alan said.

David advised the viewers on how to grow fruit, as now is the best time of year to plant them.

David said: “Anybody that’s got fruit growing in the garden, that’s eating it fresh, knows that it is at its ultimate.”

“Plant them [raspberries] from about nine inches to a foot apart,” Alan said.

David continued: “In a sunny location that’s quite sheltered and well drained.”

If you start growing your raspberries now, they will be ready by early and mid-summer.

Currants, such as blackcurrants, red currants, and white currants, are the easiest to plant, David said.

David went on to explain the best way to plant blueberries.

“They’re slightly acidic so they can grow in containers,” he said.

Alan added: “They need to be grown in acid lime free compost in a container and watered with rainwater.”

At the end of the segment, Alan finished by emphasising that now is “a brilliant time” to plant fruit.

David agreed, saying: “Something that’s healthy for the whole family as well.”
