8-year-old boy caught driving car as mom sleeps in backseat

A vehicle being driven by an 8-year-old boy whose mother was asleep in the backseat was pulled over Monday morning in downtown St. Louis, authorities said.

The car was moving against the flow of traffic, according to local Fox affiliate KTVI. Upon pulling the car over, police also found an unsecured 3-year-old sitting in the backseat.

Latonta Mayes-Gale, 28, was arrested on two counts of endangering the life of a child.

Why Mayes-Gale was asleep is unclear, according to KTVI. The slumbering mom reportedly instructed her child to take the wheel because she could no longer drive. A source reportedly told NBC News affiliate KSDK that Mayes-Gale was intoxicated when her son was pulled over.

Mayes-Gale was freed on bond Tuesday and placed on house arrest, according to the Riverfront Times. Her children are staying with their father.

An attorney for the defendant reportedly told the court an underlying mental health issue coupled with stress were factors in Monday’s incident. He said Mayes-Gale works as a home health assistant and cares for a homebound grandparent.

Mayes-Gale could serve a year in prison for each felony offense, according to NBC News. She’s due back in court on Tuesday.
